The History
African Schoolhouse #4 offered education for Black American students from 1st through 8th grade from 1893 to 1952. Black families in Chesterfield applied to the Chesterfield School District asking that a school be built for their children. The request was denied; the parents sued, won in court, and were awarded $600 to build the school.
African Schoolhouse #4 is log-framed with siding inside and outside. Originally situated on Wild Horse Creek Road, the school was moved to Faust Park in late 2021 and reconstructed in 2022-2023.
